SUMMER FUN IN PRIORSWOOD
A wide range of summer activities for children and young people from Priorswood are proving to be a big hit with the local community, thanks to a grant from the Somerset Community Foundation’s “Summerfield Developments Fund” and the hard work of Lesley Thomas, manager of the North Taunton Partnership.
Each Tuesday over 200 people come together at Lyngford Park in North Taunton to take part in a range of exciting activities and experience new challenges, such as learning to climb. The project is supported by Summerfield Developments who have set up a fund with the Somerset Community Foundation.
Richard Lloyd, Chief Executive of Summerfield Developments, said “As a local company we feel very strongly about supporting local charities and voluntary groups in Somerset. These organisations understand what is going on in their communities and how to respond. They are very effective at using a relatively small amount of money to make large impact where it really matters. By giving through the Somerset Community Foundation we are to reach these vitally important organisations and the most deserving causes.”
Lesley Thomas added “The funding we received is invaluable to this deprived area of North Taunton. It not only allows us to provide activities for the young people but it helps build a greater community spirit across all ages. Many of these young people don’t get the opportunity to have days out or join in activities further away. It also gives those in authority, such as the fire service and the police, the chance to meet the local community in an informal setting. Seeing whole families coming here for the day and enjoying themselves makes all the hard work worthwhile.”
The Somerset Community Foundation works with local businesses, families and trusts to ensure that local projects, like the North Taunton Partnership, are able to meet the needs of the communities they serve. Justin Sargent, SCF’s Director, said “There are hundreds of local voluntary groups and thousands of volunteers making a difference to people’s lives in Somerset each and every day. We meet many people and businesses – like Summerfield Developments - who are passionate about supporting Somerset and we help connect them with the causes they care most about.”
