British Horse Society
Grant: Local Network Fund, £6200
Project: A grant was awarded to the group to get the “Back on Track” initiative to get off the ground. The scheme is to help children who have disengaged from the education system. Since starting in April 2007, the riding sessions have been improving the children's’ motivation, confidence and social skills. One staff member from Bridgwater’s Pupil Referral Unit remarked how she had never seen the children pulling together on one task and so happy before, and it is having the desired effect in the classroom.

Background: The Somerset branch was established in 1987 and the Longhorn Western Riding School in Corsely and at Alstone Court were approached by the Somerset Sports and Activity Partnership to see if horse riding could be used to help children that they came into contact with.
