No one should feel lonely at Christmas. Yet we know that 1 in 6 older people in Somerset often feel lonely. Loneliness can affect all of us, but the isolated nature of rural communities and the difficulty of accessing transport means that many of our neighbours find themselves lonely.
As part of our annual Surviving Winter appeal, which provides vital grants to older people living in fuel poverty, we wanted to do more to tackle the isolation that makes Christmas a very difficult time for some of our neighbours.
That's why we're launching The Festive Fund for Somerset, which aims to fund 40 local community winter meals.
These meals will bring people together from across our communities. We want friends who haven’t seen each other for months to sit down and share a meal, and for people who’ve never met to strike up new friendships. It’s all about reducing loneliness, building stronger communities, and creating special memories for individuals who may find Christmas a difficult time of year.
The Festive Fund for Somerset, a special Somerset Community Foundation initiative, is looking for businesses and individuals who can donate £250 to sponsor a Christmas meal. Together, we can make this Christmas merry and brighter for our neighbours.
As a donor, you'll receive a special Christmas e-card you can send to others to celebrate your support.
