Somerset Move-In Fund

Grants of £10,000 to local charities and community groups directly supporting homeless people to move into independent living. Closing date: 2 October 2020

Last year we published Hidden Somerset: Homelessness, which showed that:

Those who are homeless are also particularly vulnerable to coronavirus. This is because they are more likely to have underlying health conditions and find it more difficult to access basic sanitation.

We have set up this fund in response to these findings.

How much is available?

We have £100,000 to award.

Grants will last for two years, with the second year payment conditional on a short interim report.

The average grant we expect to award is £10,000.

What are we able to fund?

In July we consulted a range of homeless charities and community groups and asked them what they needed the most at this time and how we could best utilise the funds we have.

They told us that they need funding to help their clients move into a home. This is because most homes are let unfurnished and without curtains, carpets, white goods, pots, pans, or cooking utensils.

You can use this fund to purchase these things, up to £500 per client. You cannot use it for rent advances or deposits, or for staffing or overheads. Instead, we expect you to use this as a resource alongside your existing work, which should progressively support individuals to make a better life for themselves and not simply offer shelter. This may extend to mental health, employability, and or accessing technology that can improve digital inclusion

Please remember that Somerset County Council continues to offer a Local Assistance Fund, which is administered via the Citizens Advice network. We expect our fund to complement this offer, not duplicate it.

Who can apply?

The Fund is open to:

Those who have an established presence in Somerset are our priority. We do not expect to make any grants to national organisations. We also do not expect to award grants to organisations that normally have an income of more than £1 million unless they can demonstrate their ongoing role in supporting Somerset’s homeless.

We expect applicants to have:

Who can’t apply?

We cannot support individuals directly. We also cannot award a grant that is then distributed to individuals as financial support.

We will not support:

Note that we do not cover North Somerset or Bath & North East Somerset.

How long are grants for?

While separate from our Coronavirus Response & Recovery Fund, the Move-In Fund has been designed to operate within the context of the coronavirus outbreak.

We will award grants in October and expect you to spend and report on your first-year allocation by March 2021. You will then have until March 2022 to spend your second-year allocation.

How do I make an application?

Applications should be made via an online application form, which can be accessed using the link below.

If you are unable to access the online form, then please contact us and we will support you to make your application in another way.

The form allows you to save draft versions of your application and return to it later (via an email link sent to your inbox).

The form requires you to complete a short series of questions about your group and your work. You will be asked to provide:

If you are unable to provide any of these documents at this time, then please contact us.

How do we make our decisions?

Applications will be considered in October and awards made in the middle of the month.

The panel will consider your:

Note that we can consider requests from established groups that we have a funding relationship with as well as new groups that can offer solutions to local challenges.

Finally, your application may be for an important project in your local community, but we may simply not have enough money available to award you a grant. If your application is turned down, we will tell you why it was unsuccessful, but there is no right of appeal.

If you have any questions, then please get in touch with us, but be aware that it may take longer than normal to receive a response. You can reach us on or, if that is not possible, 01749 344949.
