Apply here for a bursary to help you while you are at university.
A bursary is a sum of money given to a student to help them during their university degree. This bursary fund gives up to £500 per year, usually for up to 3 years. You don’t need to repay the money as long as it is used as intended.
You can apply for money from here if:
- You are aged 18-24
- You will be starting an undergraduate degree course at a UK university in the coming academic year
and you meet one of the following:
- you were born in the administrative County of Somerset (excludes, Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset and North Somerset), Devon or Cornwall, or
- you have been resident in the County of Somerset, Devon or Cornwall for at least 3 years before the date of your application, or
- you have been attending a school in the County of Somerset, Devon or Cornwall for at least 2 years before the date of your application
How long does it take to get the money?
You must apply by 5pm, Wednesday 9 June 2021.
We'll let you know if we can help you by mid-July 2021.
How much money do we have to give out and what can it be used for?
The Dyke Exhibition Foundation and the Hobhouse Memorial Trust provided funding to young people for educational purposes and were transferred to Somerset Community Foundation in 2019 and 2020 respectively. Combined, the two Funds have a total of around £5,000 to award each year, which represents 3 or 4 bursaries.
Bursary payments will be made directly to you to assist with fees, accommodation, purchase of books and equipment, travelling or any other expenses that are incurred as part of your degree course.
How do I apply for a bursary?
You can apply for a bursary by clicking on the button below to access an online application form. Please contact us if you can't use the online form. We'll support you to make your application in another way.
The form asks you to provide:
- your personal details (name, address, email, phone, date of birth)
- the names of the school(s) you have attended and the dates you attended them
- the name of your chosen university and the course that you intend to study
- your academic qualifications
- a statement of up to 300 words explaining why you are applying and what difference an award would make to you
- how a bursary will assist your academic studies
- your circumstances
- how much you will be receiving as the maintenance element of your student loan
- a reference from your school or college
You will need to complete the application in one go and will not be able to save and return to it. To make this easier, you can download this word document which has the questions listed.
What do we do with your application?
We’ll email you within one week to confirm that we have received your application. If you don’t hear from us in that time, then please contact us.
A member of our Grants Team will look at your application. If we have a question, then we’ll email you. If preferred, we can arrange a phone call or video call.
Your application will be considered by a Panel who will make the final decision on who receives a bursary. We will let you know the outcome of your application by mid-July.
