Burnham & Berrow Captains' Day raises funds for charities in the local area

Aug 19, 2015

Rain certainly did not stop play at the Burnham & Berrow Golf Club's Charity Day today which was in aid of the Captains’ Fund, administered by Somerset Community Foundation and raising money for four groups operating close to the golf course. Teams of keen golfers braved very wet and windy August weather to compete on the Links course for a range of prizes, and took part in a silent auction and bottle draw after their rounds.

Club Captains Pauline Thorogood and Adrian Deakins chose to support four organisations making a real difference to local communities – Back on Track, Burnham Area Rescue Boat (BARB), Somewhere House Somerset and Berrow Village Play Area.

  • Back on Track provide horse riding projects for Somerset school children with the aim of building their learning skills and improving their confidence. Through learning to ride and care for horses, the young people are encouraged to achieve goals, be more confident and enjoy being part of a team.
  • Burnham Area Rescue Boat (BARB) is a voluntary search and rescue organisation that operates two rescue hovercrafts and an inshore rescue boat in the Bridgwater Bay area. BARB is a registered charity that relies solely on donations to run its service.
  • Berrow Village Play Area work hard to ensure local children in the rurally-isolated areas in and around Berrow are able to have access to fun and safe play equipment.
  • Somewhere House Somerset’s mission is to provide a therapeutic service for anyone who chooses to access support in the local community. They are a charity offering therapeutic interventions and community projects in the Burnham on Sea area, and are specialists in helping people with addiction and mental health issues

Representatives from each of the groups attended on the day, and took advantage of the opportunity to network and spread the word among the golfers about their important work.
