The Deane Dragons Fund brings Christmas cheer to Taunton groups
During his tenure as Mayor of Taunton Deane, Councillor Dave Durdan raised money for charities and community groups in Taunton through the Deane Dragons initiative.
For the latest round of grants from the Deane Dragons Fund Cllr Durdan wanted to give grants to small voluntary groups working to support vulnerable people over the Christmas period. Grants totalling £5,720.00 have been given out to 12 groups, including Taunton & District Mencap Society (pictured) and Taunton Association for the homeless.
Taunton & District Mencap Society is one of five Local Mencap Societies in Somerset and is affiliated to National MENCAP. They encourage those with learning disabilities to become involved with organised activities and offer help and support to individuals, their families and carers. This year, Mencap wanted to provide their members with a Christmas to remember. They had their annual Christmas Party on 5th December and with the funding from the Deane Dragons Fund were able to present each of their 50 members in attendance with a gift.
Taunton Association for the Homeless As a local charitable organisation supporting those who are homeless, the winter months and Christmas season brings more demand for extra support for those who are rough sleeping. As the temperatures drop, it is vital that they have suitable resources available for their client group. A grant of £1000 was awarded. This was to help with the cost of sleeping bags and blankets and to provide a Christmas dinner for everyone.
