The first grants have been made from the West Somerset Youth Trust

Apr 28, 2016

West Somerset is a beautiful area of our county with a Heritage coastline, stunning National Park and beautiful villages with chocolate-box cottages. At SCF we are well aware of the issues hidden behind the 'rural idyll' of West Somerset, an area ranked as the poorest for social mobility in the whole of England in the latest Government Social Mobility Index report.

The lack of upward social mobility is related to a fall in local prosperity and income, a knock-on effect of waning interest in British seaside holidays, and is a problem accentuated by very poor transport links to major urban hubs in the rest of the country.

A trust transfer of funds to create the West Somerset Youth Trust was made to SCF in January of this year. The trust provides grant funding that aims to enrich the education of young people in this rurally-isolated area, by helping them to take part in life-changing activities and trips and develop skills that may seem out of their reach in West Somserset.

The first grants since the transfer of the West Somerset Youth Trust took place have just been made, and the recipients are taking part in trips to every corner of the planet.

One of the grant recipients is a young person hoping to study languages at Cardiff University, having taught herself Japanese in her spare time. She applied for a grant to take part in a cultural trip to Tokyo in July of this year, and will attend the Intercultural Institute of Japan, which is a collective of universities and schools throughout Japan who receive foreign students in many different cultural exchange courses. The trip will enable the student to immerse herself in Japanese culture and put her language skills to the test, something that is almost impossible in deepest darkest West Somerset.

The team at SCF is always happy to talk to people who are responsible for dormant trusts or charities that exist to benefit communities and people in Somerset. If you would like to talk about how the Foundation might be able to work with your trust, please contact Justin Sargent on 01749 344949.
