Grants to reduce loneliness this Christmas

Oct 25, 2016

For many of us Christmas is a time to enjoy with our family and friends. But for the half a million pensioners who are estimated to spend Christmas Day by themselves each year the festive season can be anything but enjoyable.

So this year Somerset Community Foundation is inviting you to apply for a grant of up to £500 to reduce the loneliness and isolation experienced by older people in your community. You might want to organise Christmas dinner itself, or organise a community event in your village hall, or something else entirely.

We want these activities to complement our annual Surviving Winter appeal, which asks people to donate their Winter Fuel payment to those who are less fortunate than themselves. Older people use their Surviving Winter grant to heat their homes or purchase essential items. This year we want to help them stay connected as well.

In order to apply your group will need to have its own bank account, constitution, and management committee. You’ll also need to know what you plan to do and why it’s needed by older people in your community. If you have these things then you can apply using our simple online form.

If you’d like to talk to us about your idea before applying, please call Andrew Ridgewell on 01749 344949.

The deadline to submit your application is Friday 25 November.
