Siblings from Marriott Run Marathon for Flood Relief

May 14, 2014

Anna Clifford and Tom Stokes will be running the Edinburgh Marathon on 25th May in support of the Somerset Flood Relief Fund, managed by Somerset Community Foundation. The siblings grew up in Merriott and attended Wadham School in Crewkerne. Despite living in Birmingham and Sussex now, they still think of Somerset as their home.

Anna says, “We have both always done a lot of sport together, after doing the Birmingham Half last year, we challenged each other to run a marathon. We have some family in Scotland which is why we chose the Edinburgh Marathon. We wanted to raise money for charity - to make our efforts mean something, other than exhaustion! Where we grew up is fairly close to Muchelney, and when home for a weekend you could see the areas around there that were affected by the flood. Seeing the devastation we felt helpless. I then came across an article about the Somerset Community Foundation and the work that they were doing for people affected by the floods and wanted to do what I could to help. What we raise will be a drop in the ocean of the costs of the damage but I hope that what we raise will help in some way.”

You can sponsor Anna and Tom on their justgiving page:

So far the Foundation has awarded grants to over 350 households and has supported a number of partner organisations providing practical support on the ground, taking the total value of grants issued to over £450,000. Thanks to the generosity of thousands of people from across the UK and beyond who have donated to the Somerset Flood Relief Fund, nearly £1.2m has been raised. Fundraising efforts for 2014 flooding crisis will wrap up by the end of the summer, but the Foundation will continue to asses grant applications for flood-affected homes, micro-businesses and community groups for months to come.

Our ability to respond to this crisis is built on a long track record of community support delivered since 2002. If you would like participate in a sponsored event for Somerset Community Foundation, please call Mary Hancock 01749 344949.
