Childrens Voices Changing Choices
Somerset Community Foundation recently awarded a grant to Citizens Advice Mendip to extend their successful financial literacy project to Sedgemoor. Originally piloted in Mendip, the Childrens Voices Changing Choices project has been delivered to a number of schools, and it has been so successful that the charity is rolling it out to year seven students further afield.
The project includes sessions with both parents and teachers, as well as children, and provides education on debt, budgeting and healthy eating choices. Results from the Mendip pilot showed that at least 75% of children had a better understanding of the basic financial framework in which their family lives, and children developed a better understanding of food product knowledge, including nutritional content, value and price. Meanwhile, parents felt empowered to discuss and manage family eating options, and at least half of the participating families are leading more sustainable and healthier lifestyles.
Around 100 pupils are expected to benefit from the extension of the Childrens Voices Changing Choices project. The grant was made possible by financial backing from Smith & Williamson.
