Third round of grants awarded from Hinkley Point C funding

The Hinkley Point C Community Fund Small Grants Programme, administered by Somerset Community Foundation, has awarded six new grants, which total over £33,000 in this third round of awards.  The awards have been made to Cruse Bereavement Care Somerset, Bridgwater; Friends of Berrow Beach, Burnham-on-Sea; Nourish Bumps, Babies and Breastfeeding, Cannington; The Quantock Foodbank, Watchet; Minehead Cycling Club, Minehead; and Wembdon Cricket Club.

  • Somerset Area Cruse Bereavement Care provide a free bereavement support service throughout Somerset for adults, young people and children. The grant will go towards setting up a telephone counselling service for people in Sedgemoor and West Somerset in particular. Grant received: £4,000.   • Friends of Berrow Beach is a recently-formed community group that meet regularly to collect litter from the beach. The grant will buy additional beach cleaning equipment, helping the volunteers tackle waste on the beach. Grant received: £2,650.
  • Nourish Bumps, Babies and Breastfeeding aims to protect, promote and support breastfeeding within the community of Bridgwater and surrounding villages. The grant will help to establish their weekly group in Cannington, offering pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers support, information and empathy in a non-clinical environment. Nourish is especially important for those new to the area who may have left support networks behind. Grant received: £9,056 (over three years).
  • The Quantock Foodbank is a new foodbank for Watchet, Williton and the surrounding area of West Somerset, providing emergency food to local people and families in short term crisis.  Grant received: £2,563.34.
  • Minehead Cycling Club promote cycling in Minehead and the surrounding area. The grant will go towards establishing the Minehead Grand Prix as a popular annual event, with longer-term plans to develop a weekend of cycling, running and triathlon races by working with other local sports clubs. The promotion of cycling in the area will encourage healthy lifestyles and offer a sustainable alternative to car travel.  Grant received: £10,000 (over three years).   • Wembdon Cricket Club’s grant will go towards purchasing a compact tractor that has tyres suitable for sports pitches to help maintain their 11 acres of grounds, improving drainage and playing surfaces. As the demand for sporting facilities in Wembdon increases, well-maintained grounds are increasingly important. Grant received: £5,000. More information can be found here.

 The Hinkley Point C Community Fund Small Grants Programme continues to support projects that seek to mitigate the impacts and take advantage of the opportunities of the Hinkley Point C build. Charities, voluntary groups or social enterprises considering applying for the funding must normally operate on less than £100,000 a year. Applications to the fund, which generally awards grants of up to £5,000, can be submitted at any time, as decisions are usually made every 6 – 8 weeks.
