The Somerset Smokefree Sports Club Grant Programme
Over 50 outdoor sports clubs throughout Somerset will receive a welcome new year boost in the form of a £500 grant this January.
The Somerset Smokefree Sports Club Grant Programme, funded by the Somerset Smokefree Alliance, has been set up in order to encourage clubs with younger members to adopt a smokefree policy during their youth sports activities.
The grants scheme, administered by the Somerset Community Foundation, involves club members attending free training sessions throughout Somerset with advice on how to implement the policy and to get the message across to members and visitors alike. The sessions are being delivered in by Somerset Activity and Sports Partnership (SASP) in partnership with Somerset County Council and signs are also being provided.
Nicola Crocker (Tobacco Control Specialist at Somerset County Council) said "This exciting new project which has just been launched in Somerset provides the opportunity for us to work with local sports clubs to implement smokefree policies when young people are participating in sport, to help protect them from the dangers of secondhand smoke, and to 'denormalise' smoking. As part of the project we have been training sports coaches so that they are able to educate young people regarding the negative effects that smoking has on fitness".
