Somerset’s Surviving Winter appeal supporting local older people raises incredible £100,000

December 13, 2022

As the temperatures plummeted this week, Somerset Community Foundation (SCF) is pleased to announce that, following the launch last month [November 2022], the 2022/23 Surviving Winter appeal has already raised a phenomenal £100,000 – thanks to the incredible generosity of local donors.

Demand for the Surviving Winter grants this year is stronger than ever, and donations are being rapidly disbursed across the county in grants of up to £500 to help ensure our vulnerable older neighbours can stay warm, safe and well in the face of soaring energy bills.

The annual appeal encourages pensioners to donate some or all of their Winter Fuel Payment, if they don’t need it themselves. These donations provide funding and support to older people across Somerset who are struggling to heat their homes.

No one should have to choose between heating and eating. If you can afford to, please donate your Winter Fuel Payment and help people like George stay warm, safe and well this winter.

SCF’s Philanthropy Director, Laura Blake, thanked local people for their incredible support: “We’ve been astounded by the magnitude of support we’ve received for the Surviving Winter appeal so far this year, particularly in light of the cost-of-living crisis. We’ve seen many donors generously passing on their larger Winter Fuel Payment, and others donating their monthly energy rebate. We’re hugely grateful to each and every person who has donated – and particularly those who donate year after year. Without your support, we know lots of older people in Somerset would be suffering in silence during these long, cold winter months.”

Help Somerset Community Foundation reach their target to help at least 800 isolated and vulnerable older people stay warm, safe and well this winter.

If you would like to donate to Surviving Winter, visit or call 01749 344949. A donation form is also available to download from the Somerset Community Foundation website, or you can send a cheque made payable to Somerset Community Foundation (writing SW on the reverse) to Yeoman House, Bath and West Showground, Shepton Mallet, BA4 6QN, or call 01749 344949.

This year, alongside the Surviving Winter appeal, SCF are running the Somerset Cost-of-Living Crisis Appeal. Together, these initiatives will provide a lifeline for local people of all ages who are living in poverty.

More information can be found on the SCF website, where details on which partner organisations deliver Surviving Winter grants can also be found.

The costs of running the Surviving Winter appeal are met entirely from Gift Aid contributions, so donors can be confident that their donation will reach those who need it the most.
