The Somerset Arts and Heritage Fund

We created The Somerset Arts and Heritage Fund to raise vital funds and increase access to arts and heritage for people in Somerset, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds. By supporting this Collective Giving Fund, you’ll join others to make a greater impact with your giving.

Together, we can provide more opportunities for local people to experience our heritage, explore creative talents and improve wellbeing.

Our funding priorities

Our Fund is guided by research and shaped by listening to people working across arts and heritage in Somerset.

As a result, we’re committed to these 3 priorities:

  • Caring for our local heritage and helping people understand their place in Somerset’s rich history.
  • Increasing opportunities for people to explore their creative talents across the arts.
  • Ensuring communities enjoy a rich cultural life that can be experienced by all, particularly for communities that have been underserved in the past.

Why we need your help

Somerset is a creative county rich in history. But funding cuts mean local arts organisations are battling to survive. Without change, we risk talented young people failing to connect with the kind of culture and heritage that nurtures opportunity and changes lives.

Here in Somerset:
  • Arts funding has dropped by 74% in just 3 years.
  • We get less than half the arts funding per person compared to England.
  • Heritage funding is 29% lower than in England.

Arts funding has dropped by 74% in just 3 years.

We’ve received several grants from SCF that helped us bring people together to share ideas and create their own work. We want people to understand that creativity doesn’t have to be the preserve of a particular group, but is open to everyone.

Why collective giving works

When people give together, their donations go further. Collective giving means:

  • your donations are pooled to create greater impact
  • more funding can reach smaller, local groups that may struggle to access national funding, supported by our friendly local team
  • decisions are informed by local knowledge, research and lived experience
  • support can be flexible and responsive as local needs change.

Our Collective Giving Funds

Bringing your giving to life

When you donate to one of our Collective Giving Funds, you become part of a community of passionate people who want to change the world on our doorstep. As a donor, you’ll receive:

  • a dedicated annual impact report that shows the difference you’ve made, including case studies of charities you’ve helped
  • updates on our wider work at SCF, including research about local need and stories of how local groups we’ve funded are changing lives
  • recognition in our Annual Review and on our website (with your permission)
  • occasional invitations to events such as webinars or visits to projects supported by your donations.
