The Somerset Fund

The Somerset Fund is a great way for businesses and individuals to give back to small, local charities and support a wide range of good causes from Wincanton to Watchet.

Every donation is boosted by an incredible 50% thanks to matched funding from Somerset Council, so your giving makes an even greater impact.

Thanks to your support, as at 2023/24, we’ve awarded more than £350,000 of funding in grants to local charities across the county since 2019. Your donations have funded everything from mental health support to youth sports clubs, social clubs for older people and so much more.

Making a difference through local giving

As a business, we’ve often supported local sports clubs and schools, but we’ve struggled to identify local needs. We found SCF in 2019 through their Surviving Winter appeal and have supported them ever since, becoming supporters of The Somerset Fund in 2023. There’s never been a more urgent need for organisations like SCF to connect local supporters with their communities to help them make a difference. We’re confident that our regular donation supports a wide range of local charities and we get opportunities to get involved and regular updates about the impact of our support.

The majority of our work is one-to-one befriending for people who are experiencing isolation and loneliness. Most of the people we support are over 65 and tend to be experiencing permanent loneliness – from losing a life partner or a soul mate. We have over 300 volunteers who give one hour a week, plus 25 community drivers. The grant we received from The Somerset Fund supported our core running costs and helps us coordinate our volunteers. We’re here to help people’s health and wellbeing, and alleviate the effects of isolation and loneliness. Ultimately, loneliness is never going to be defeated and people will always need help. Our work is saving lives by changing lives: a lot of the time it’s just about getting that confidence back, and it makes a huge difference. Through our befriending they become real, true friends.

Why small, local charities need your support.

It can be hard to know which local charities to support and to find good causes near you. Small, local charities and community groups are vital in helping those in need, but it’s tougher than ever for them to raise the funds they need to keep going. 

Many of these life-changing groups are led by volunteers and most run on a very small budget. For these organisations, a small, flexible grant from The Somerset Fund makes a huge difference and goes a long way.
