The Somerset Environment Fund
We created The Somerset Environment Fund to bring together local people passionate about supporting environmental issues and funding local environmental projects. By supporting this Collective Giving Fund, you’ll join with others to make a greater impact with your giving and build a more sustainable Somerset.
The Somerset Environment Fund is driven by research and consultation with charities and environmental experts. This means your donation will make the most impact possible.
Our funding priorities
Our Fund is guided by research and shaped by listening to local charities and environmental experts.
As a result, we’re committed to these 3 priorities:
- Environmental justice – raising awareness and advocating for action on environmental crises.
- Improving energy efficiency through retrofitting community buildings and making improvements to fuel-poor households.
- Bringing communities together to use, create and conserve green space.
Why we need your help
Somerset has many areas of great natural beauty. But, like the rest of the world, it’s under threat from the climate emergency.
We need to protect our local environment – and make sure everyone is able to enjoy it. Right now too many people can’t easily access green space, which means they miss out on health and wellbeing benefits.
Here in Somerset:
- Two-thirds of buildings need to be made more energy efficient (retrofitted) to fight climate change.
- Communities are farther away from green space than the national average.
- Some local areas have lost up to 11.5% of their grassland habitats – and only 10% are considered good enough to support abundant and diverse wildlife.

Many landowners want to see their land used for alternative things, but some lack the time and resources to reach out into their communities to seek ideas. We were able to bridge that gap, and access land and landowners that were happy for us to open up their land and offer something inclusive to the community. Our SCF grant helps us to set up our permaculture market garden which grows sustainably produced, organic food which we give to our local foodbank. We knew many local people were struggling to feed their families, and we wanted to set up a dignified system where they access fresh and healthy produce, irrespective of wealth and class.
