How Cricket is Transforming Lives in Somerset

Participant at Somerset Cricket Foundation

From tackling loneliness to supporting people with dementia, Somerset Cricket Foundation is using sport to rebuild confidence, community and wellbeing.

“We often see people arrive feeling anxious, isolated, and unsure. But over time, they rediscover confidence, connection and a sense of belonging,” says Maralyn Smith, Managing Director at Somerset Cricket Foundation.

Through initiatives such as sporting memories sessions and walking cricket, Somerset Cricket Foundation has created inclusive, welcoming spaces where participants can stay active at their own pace, as well as feel a sense of connection and purpose. Sessions also offer vital respite for carers, easing the pressure of round-the-clock support.

Thanks to a 3-year grant of £50,000 from the Hinkley Point C Community Fund, Somerset Cricket Foundation is continuing to deliver vital community programmes across impacted communities, supporting people living with dementia, disabilities, and social isolation.

More than a game

One participant, diagnosed with early-stage dementia 3 years ago, initially struggled to leave the house. “He was anxious and withdrawn,” Maralyn explained. “But since joining, his whole personality has changed. Today, he is more confident, physically active, and even takes on a leadership role within the group.

“Without funding, we would struggle to deliver the quality and consistency of the support we provide. The grant has enabled us to secure venues, employ qualified coaches, and provide transport for those who would otherwise be unable to attend.”

The impact is reflected in the Foundation’s results, with 92% of participants saying they feel less lonely since joining.

“The grant has allowed us to invest in expanding our reach, – we also have plans to develop new programmes that combine physical activity with health education,” says Maralyn.

“Most importantly, funding will continue to support what matters most ensuring that people across Somerset feel less alone and are part of a community that enriches their future.”
