A Chance just to be a child: The difference a young carers grant can make

Katie Fowle and her brother at Lower Elsford Farm
For young carers across the county, a break from their role is rarely something they get to experience. Social isolation, emotional strain and simply having less time to be a child are all part of daily life for many young carers.
Our young carers grants for days out or short breaks give young people the chance to step away from their responsibilities, whether that’s a family day out, a short break or an independent activity.
We spoke to Sarah Davies, whose daughter Katie is a young carer. They recently used the grant for a family holiday to Lower Elsford Farm. Sarah shared what life is like for Katie, and what the break meant to them all.
Life as a young carer
“Katie’s brother has complex medical and SEND needs, and I have health difficulties, meaning family life can be unpredictable and stressful,” she says.
“She is understanding when plans change around her brother’s needs or my health – Katie worries about both of us and is affected by the extra appointments, routines and pressures at home. She also has a very special connection with her brother and can often help him regulate in ways that we, as parents, cannot always do in the same way.
This can mean she has less time to simply relax and be a child, especially when things are difficult or unpredictable.”
Time to just be
We asked how the break alleviated the everyday pressures Katie may feel.
“Having time away from routines and caring responsibilities made a big difference to Katie. It gave her something positive to look forward to and a chance to step away from the usual worries and pressures at home. It was lovely to see her so happy and excited, and she came away with lots of lovely memories,” says Sarah.
“We’re so grateful for the grant, it gave Katie and our family a much-needed break.”
Stories like Katie’s show how even a short break can make a lasting difference, giving young carers time to relax, create happy memories and feel less isolated.
