“Memories that we will treasure”: giving young carers in Somerset a chance to be a child

Bella at Longleat Safari Park

According to the Childhood Lottery Report, Somerset is ranked the 11th worst place in England for young people to grow up, and rural isolation can leave people of all ages feeling cut off. For young carers, that sense of isolation can be even harder to bear.

Young carers told us that finding activities they can get to and afford is a real challenge, and a break from caring is rare. Our funding for days out and short breaks gives young carers valuable time to do something they love, away from everyday responsibilities. We deliver this funding on behalf of Somerset Council.

Jesse Everleigh, Senior Children’s Commissioner at Somerset Council, said: “These stories are a powerful reminder that young carers are children first. The simple experiences many families take for granted can be truly transformative, bringing joy, confidence and connection.”

Three young carers and their families shared what the funding meant to them.

Oscar

Oscar is 12 and helps care for his dad, who lives with a disability. With support from the funding, the family spent a day at LEGOLAND.

Oscar’s mum, Nicola, said: “We are incredibly grateful for your support in making this trip go ahead. It meant a lot to us and has helped us to create some amazing memories that we will treasure.”

Bella

Bella helps look after her younger sister. She told us: “I spend a lot of time keeping my little sister happy and distracted. I give up a lot of what I want to do to keep her happy and I find it hard to have time to myself.”

Bella’s family purchased annual passes to Longleat Safari Park.

In a letter to us, Bella wrote: “I have been enjoying seeing the animals, especially the bats, and feeding the birds. It has made it much easier to go on a day out. And I can go on my own with Mummy and Daddy.”

Wilfred

Wilfred is 9 and helps care for his brother Hayden, who has autism, ADHD, sensory processing difficulties and communication needs.

Thanks to the funding, the family took a trip to London.

Wilfred said: “Thank you, we had a great trip, and Hayden was able to come with us because we got the train and stayed in a lovely hotel. It was so much fun, and I loved the history!”

Creating lasting memories

Caring doesn’t stop at weekends or in the school holidays. A day out or a short break gives young carers something to look forward to and a chance to put themselves first.
