Exploring rural philanthropy: SCF helps launch UK-wide rersearch

Somerset Community Foundation (SCF) has played a key role in launching a new UK-wide research project exploring how philanthropic funding supports rural communities.
Announced on 27 January by independent research charity IVAR, the project will examine how effective funding reaches rural areas, where need is often significant but less visible. While rural philanthropy is well established in North America, there has been no comparable UK-wide analysis to date.
The early groundwork for the research was led by SCF’s Chief Executive, Justin Sargent, alongside Dr Nicola Frost from Devon Community Foundation. Beginning in 2022, they worked together to shape the idea, sharing early analysis with Community Foundations across the UK and Europe. Working with sector colleagues and stakeholders, they went on to develop the framework for the UK’s first formal study of philanthropy in rural communities.
SCF is contributing £10,000 towards the research. Additional funding has been provided by CCLA Investment Management, the Rayne Foundation, The National Lottery Community Fund’s Local Trust programme, Welsh Government and the Community Foundation for Wales.
Justin Sargent, Chief Executive of Somerset Community Foundation, said: “Through our work over many years, we see first-hand the level of need in Somerset’s rural communities and the challenges that come with rurality. What’s less clear is how well regional and national funding is responding – or how easily it can. We know this isn’t just an issue for Somerset.
“By working in partnership with Devon Community Foundation and IVAR, we can begin to address that gap in understanding. Although this is a UK-wide project, I’m keen to ensure Somerset benefits from the learning and insight it brings.”
The research findings are expected to be published in late summer.
